The original iPhone redefined the smartphone market when it was launched back in 2007 and it has since gone on to chance consumer expectations about the kinds of things that smartphones should offer. The touch screen interface with its multi-touch sensitivity, coupled with the user friendly operating system, have become the iPhone`s calling cards. Add in multiple gigabytes of onboard storage space, high speed mobile internet connectivity and GPS navigation and you have a phone that every other manufacturer is attempting to better.

The iPhone 3GS is the third version of Apple`s mobile to hit the market and it offers several improvements over its predecessors, though on the outside you would be hard pressed to notice any significant changes. First the 3GS has a new anti-grease and dirt coating on the screen, which may not sound like much, but will benefit every iPhone fan who uses their phone regularly. Inside Apple has added in an even more powerful processor than before, though it has again chosen to underclock the unit to below its full operating potential in order to improve battery life and reduce heat inside the sealed casing of the phone. The maximum internal storage space has also been bolstered to 32GB, though a 16GB version is also available if you want to save a bit of cash, or you do not think that you will find a way to fill the cavernous space. The iPhone 3GS has had a performance boost across the board thanks to the addition of 256MB of RAM, which is double that of the 3G and the original iPhone. The package is completed by a 3.2 megapixel camera, which still lacks a flash.

The biggest changes to come to the iPhone 3GS are arguably visible in the updated operating system (OS). The messaging functions have been improved by the addition of a cut, copy and paste tool. You can now select text or content from any message, email or web page and then copy it over to another message. This is the kind of functionality you would expect from a device that purports to be a miniaturised computer rather than an oversized mobile phone. The iPhone 3GS OS now allows users to send multimedia messages to one another, containing pictures and videos that have been snapped with the built-in camera. There is also a video editing suite preinstalled, allowing you to trim your clips, cut them together and add your own commentary and music before you send them or upload them to your video sharing site of choice.

The Apple iPhone may have been dictating the direction of the smartphone market over the past few years, but most other manufacturers are beginning to catch up and even surpass the iPhone. The battle now is being fought between the various operating systems, with Google`s Android providing a viable alternative for those who do not want to go for Apple`s admittedly expensive solution. Other manufacturers including Samsung are jumping on the OS bandwagon with their own offerings, though most experts believe that as prices begin to fall and more consumers buy into the smartphone ideal, there will only be room for a few key victors.
